On Getting What You Want

On Getting What You Want

In college, my roommate applied for a college program at Walt Disney World. It sounded awesome so I applied too.  They came to EIU to interview everyone and I still remember what I wore for the interview.  I wore a white turtleneck and a red sweater.

I had a great interview. The women I interviewed with seemed to love me.

A few weeks later, we got a letter. My roommate was accepted and I WAS NOT.

What?! I was shocked.

How could they not accept me? I was totally Disney material. I’d already been planning on doing the job. The minute I’d heard about applying for the program, I considered it done.

Clearly, they weren’t on board with my plan.

I remember getting mad. And then sad. I even threw myself a mini pity party. F them. They don’t know what they’re missing!!!

And then it hit me.

They really don’t know what they’re missing.

So I called to tell them. I talked to everyone who would listen. I explained that I was Disney material. That this must have been a mistake. That I was already planning on it. That I would work SO hard. They would be so happy if they hired me.

I begged. I pleaded. I stated my case.

And you know what happened next? They hired me.

They finally gave in. And said “Fine. Come on down.”

I did not take “NO” for an answer.  I followed my heart, stepped up with courage and made my dream come true.

It was a great lesson in going after and getting what you want.

Nothing is ever impossible.

What do you want? Can you go after it?

True Happiness, as It Turns Out, Doesn’t Happen Overnight

True Happiness, as It Turns Out, Doesn’t Happen Overnight

The J.O.B

I took on this mission like a J. O. B. Diving headfirst into the world of personal development, I read every book from Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance to Power Vs Force.  I studied every guru out there: Pema Chodron, Wayne Dyer, Neale Donald Walsh, Eckhart Tolle, Oprah (Oh wow, did I watch a lot of Oprah).

The climb was long and hard at times, but I found my way to the top of the mountain and even started downhill (The view, the trees, the easy road ahead! I’d done it!).  Then at 35, I got married to the man of my dreams.

Brand. New.  Mountain.

At 38, I had Jack. He was seven weeks early. And then he cried for six straight months.

Zoe came along at 40. And I realized I was only at base camp.

There in front of me stood Mt. Everest.

I had to start climbing again…

So, that’s exactly what I did, and what I do. Every single day.

I climb for my kids – So they don’t have a mom who acts all happy on Facebook but yells at them every night.

I climb for my husband – So he’s not married to a woman who gets resentful when he works late and punishes him by withholding sex.

I climb for my siblings – Because they already lost one sibling and don’t deserve to lose another—to anger, sorrow, frustration or stress.

I climb for other moms – Moms who know deep down that they deserve more and desperately want to go to the edge but are afraid to even venture out of their tents.

The journey isn’t easy. It’s long, hard and treacherous at times. But one thing I know for sure is that we can’t climb alone. We need a team. We need a whole village of sisters to help us up this mountain.  We need Oprah and Deepak and wine (So. Much. Wine.).

So, I’m asking you to climb. To climb for you, to climb with me, to climb for your kids, for your relationship, for the happiness that you know you deserve.

Who’s with me?

I Used To Be That Girl!

I Used To Be That Girl!

I used to be the girl …

The girl who drank 5 or 6 nights a week, and couldn’t say no to a party.  Who slept until noon as often as possible.  Who blew off engagements because she was hung over.

Who never worked out.

Who never fed her mind.

The girl who gossiped about people, and judged people.

Who ate McDonald’s, Taco Bell and White Castle.  Who drank sugar filled Starbucks drinks daily.

Who had more self-doubt then she did belief.

Who didn’t think she was enough.  Not smart enough. Not capable enough Not worthy enough and not lovable.

Now I’m the girl…

Who wakes up early.

Who begins her day in gratitude.

Who reads affirmations and says them out loud.

Who meditates and visualizes, and uses a chakra kit.

Who shows up for her friends day or night or 3 am if they need her.

Who shows up for herself and completes what she starts.  Who puts her self-care first. And makes her health a priority.

Who has more positive self-talk than negative.

Who eats super-foods daily. Who takes supplements daily.

Who loves on her husband daily!

Who sets annual goals. Quarterly goals. Monthly goals and weekly goals.  Who tracks and measures her daily habits to stay on track.

And who will never settle for who she was before.

I’m that girl now – and if I am that girl – then anything is possible!

Who are you?
